What To Do When Your Team Just Doesn’t Want to Work

Written by: Keleigh Lauermann

Have you ever had something on your to-do list that you just don’t want to do?

  • Sometimes it’s because we just don’t have the motivation or desire.
  • Sometimes we don’t see the value is getting it done.
  • Sometimes we straight up don’t feel like it.

Other times, the reasoning is more subtle–we don’t know how to do it well, so we avoid it all together.

You know Monica on Friends? I’m the person who would want her as a friend to clean my house and keep it in top shape. I just do NOT get the same kind of joy and excitement!

Cleaning my house was not a great joy of mine. You know Monica on Friends? I’m the person who would want her as a friend to clean my house and keep it in top shape. I just do NOT get the same kind of joy and excitement! That is, until I got a couple of great tools (stick with me y’all! I’m going somewhere with this!):

  • First, I discovered the Trader Joe’s All-Purpose Cleaner. Ya’ll, this is the cleaner of all cleaners. I think I’ve found Monica’s secret ingredient in her cleaner, ladies!
  • My second tool is my O-Cedar Mop and Bucket. It’s more economical than disposable mop pads and I don’t have to touch the dirty mop, and I don’t have to use the less economical and less environmentally friendly Swiffer wet pads. You guys, if you haven’t seen this mop in action, you should totally check it out. Dare I say I actually have fun mopping??
  • Oh, and how could I possibly forget the incredible Dyson Pet vacuum we got for Christmas? I’d say more about it, but the name speaks for itself.

And as silly as it may sound, I even did research online how to best clean my house… don’t judge!

The best article I read was one that called me out on my cleaning (or lack thereof). The challenge was to set a timer on your phone and then clean, say, the countertops and mirror of your bathroom and hit stop. You will be surprised, they said, at how little time so many cleaning tasks actually take. That took me only about a minute!

It made me start thinking about my business.

I would get it in my head that I needed to have ALL the time in the world set aside to get anything accomplished…and then I would wind up putting things off completely because I felt like I didn’t have enough time.

  • I wouldn’t text that lead.
  • My follow-ups would be forgotten.
  • I’d skip out on filling out my Weekly Accomplishment Sheet.

I had it in my mind that it would take so long to get through my to-do list… but when I timed them to see how long they actually took (like my cleaning), I realized it wasn’t the time that was the issue. It was my beliefs.

Do you ever find yourself thinking, “None of my consultants want to sell more or move up the career path”?

Do you ever find yourself thinking, “None of my consultants want to sell more or move up the career path”?

Perhaps working their business is a lot like me and cleaning!

It’s not that they want a dirty house…or rather, in their case, to not make money.

In fact, I’d argue: If someone doesn’t “want” to, it’s likely not because they literally don’t want to do something… they just don’t have the tools they need, training that that appeals to their learning style, or they haven’t been shown the benefit of doing whatever that task is.

I knew I needed to clean my house and I knew it would benefit me, but until I read that article that spoke to me in my language (I like efficiency and not wasting time), it just didn’t click.

As leaders, we need to be creative in how we approach our team, too!

We can’t just say something once, in one way, then feel frustrated if someone doesn’t see our point of view or understand immediately. The way that we learn is often not the same as the person sitting next to us.

We all have our “whys” and our motivations, and it is our job to meet our team members where they are and speak their language. If you’re into the 5 Love Languages, then you’ve heard this before: If your love language is gifts, but your team members’ love language is quality time then the way you’ll motivate her is by investing your time in her.

On that note, it also means that our training systems and tools need to flexible and adaptable. In order to reach the entire team, we need to provide training tools that speak to ALL learning types and personalities. For example, your new consultant packet needs to be a mix of tracking sheets, logical explanations, pictures, and step-by-step instructions.

If you hand someone a New Consultant Packet full of details paragraphs of information but they learn best by visualizing then your message will be completely lost and the result? Lack of action. Complacency – because the tools you gave them didn’t show them the benefit of taking the next step in a way that they could understand.

Now, this isn’t a sales pitch, so I’m not going to spend too much time digging deeper into the tools we offer but for those of you who want to start implementing tools that bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be then I encourage you to check out our Full Circle System

I mentioned before that your tools need to be flexible and they need to be able to adapt to how your consultants learn – and that’s exactly what the Full Circle System is.

It's a plug-and-play, system of Canva editable templates for direct sellers including New Consultant Packets, Recruiting Packets, Hostess Programs, and more… all with free updates for life! And this is important because it allows you to easily adapt on the fly to what your team needs from you in their training and tools.

So remember:  If someone doesn’t “want” to do something, it’s likely not because they literally don’t want to do it… they just don’t have the tools they need, training that that appeals to their learning style, or they haven’t been shown the benefit of doing whatever that task is.

Your job is now to implement a system in your business – whether you buy our ready-to-use system or you build it from scratch – that speaks to all of the learning styles, love languages, and personalities that make up your diverse and beautiful team.
