Let me start by saying I have not read a book cover-to-cover since I graduated high school in 2010. To push it a step further, I have not read a book cover-to-cover since about 8th grade.
That’s not to say I don’t love reading, although my actions speak otherwise. I used to gobble up books like they were they were going out of style. You know when you go to the movies and you are so immersed in the movie that you leave feeling a little confused because you feel all the feelings of the movie, but it isn’t real life? But you feel them so strongly, as if it were real life anyway? That is what reading was for me.
But life got busy, art school was all about visual learning, and I “just didn’t have the time” so I, more easily than I’d like to admit, just forgot how much I loved reading.
And then I found the book, A Simplified Life by Emily Ley.
And it was so pretty I had to buy it.
Yep, I judged this book by it’s cover… and boy am I glad I did because 3.5 hours after it arrived from Amazon prime I had finished reading and marking up the entire thing. And I was ready to take on the world.
The thing about this book that compelled me to read it cover to cover in a simple sitting was the amount of immediately-usable information. This book called for action and action is something I can get behind. As a business owner who is pretty much learning as I go and making it up as I reach new situations I am constantly busy and a little bit overwhelmed and lord knows I am certainly not alone. A Simplified Life spoke directly to that, and gave me definitive steps to make small changes and there’s nothing I love more than a plan of action.
Last night I posted on instagram after I finished this book because I wanted to give an immediate recommendation. First, I wrote: “If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed in life or business or a relationship to the point of not being able to move, then this book is for you.” A huge pigeonhole. So I changed it to: “If you have ever wanted to simplify I highly recommend this book”…. duh. So I erased that.
Finally, I settled on “If your goal is to have a more intentional present life, business, and relationship(s) then this book is for you” … and that I can stand behind.
