There’s this one type of post that I see people share on Facebook ALL THE TIME that literally makes me cringe… To the point where, if the person posting it said to me, “Keleigh, how can I increase engagement on social media?!” my immediate response would be “stop sharing this type of content. Nothing else matters until you stop sharing this post.”
And I stand by this so wholeheartedly that I dedicated today’s entire podcast episode to it. Listen now to learn how to recognize this type of content in multiple forms, why it’s so incredibly damaging to your ability to get engagement and alternative content that will help you get more interaction in a way this post never will.

023. Avoid this Facebook Post If you Want Sales and Engagement
[0:58] Oh my gosh the other day I saw something on Facebook but seriously made me cringe so hard and it's not the first time I've seen it. But it just really hit me the other day that.
[1:12] This post is destroying the engagement of the person who shared it like if they're ever looking for ways to increase engagement on social media I would immediately say stop sharing this post like. Delete it get rid of it look like don't ever use this strategy again and so I want to. Share it with you want to tell you what this post said and I want to walk through why it's so important to like.
[1:42] Literally never post this type of post again and I know I sound so dramatic right now. But I think you'll understand why after we get into it so I'm really excited to talk about this because I think it's going to change your life. Okay again I'm being dramatic but let's go ahead and Dive Right In so the other day I'm on social media I'm scrolling scrolling scrolling and then all of a sudden this post comes up and it's like okay y'all I need some help I'm like oh here we go and then it goes on and it says I'm on a scavenger hunt and I in all caps really want to win. And then it says.
[2:23] All the women that participate will get a fun free gift for me I need women in the following categories and then it in this one it listed like careers so nurse teacher.
[2:37] Blah blah blah that sort of thing I've also seen it.
[2:42] The beauty industry where it's like I need people with brown hair blond hair blue eyes green eyes like. Dark skin tones lighter skin tones like you know different describing factors and I seen it for other other Industries as well the hole. The whole premise of this type of post is basically to say.
[3:06] I'm in a contest doing a scavenger hunt I am challenged to do blah blah blah I need you to help. Comment below if you meet this criteria and then it gives so much criteria that literally no one is left out like everybody. Everybody qualifies right. And it's the kind of post where you look at it and you're like I know what's happening here like you just listed so many different criteria that literally all of us qualify so like.
[3:38] Who do you not need like give us the list of who you don't need. And so it's just it's uncomfortable all around so I want to just talk about this a little bit and just get into the details on. Why this is so cringy right off the bat but also why this genuinely destroys your engagement on Facebook and makes it really really hard. To actually get people to comment in the future like your post share your post engage with you message you and buy from you. And now before we dig in I just want to. Say although I'm really passionate about this and I'm being a little bit dramatic right now because it's like 4:30 on a Thursday and I'm ready for the weekend and so I'm just like letting it fly I just want to say. If you've done this there is no shame here like it's okay don't don't go crazy like it's all good, you can fix this there is hope no worries so don't stress if you've done this you might have even done it this week like don't freak out okay we're going to talk about why not to do it, and then I'm going to give you some alternative options and no stress you can just start fresh here okay no judgment Zone all right let's go ahead and Dive Right In so first and foremost.
[4:56] When you post that you're in a scavenger hunt or you're in a competition or in a challenge or anything like that and you're actually not. It really really really really really diminishes your trust with the people that are following you they start to look at what you're saying and they don't believe you, most people know better they can see right through these types of posts. Why because everyone and their mother is sharing them like when you copy and paste a post like that they recognized it like people see it and they're like Oh My Aunt Sally who represents like.
[5:37] I heart candles Express also posted that that's kind of weird like. They don't even represent the same company how are they in the same challenge how are they posting the exact same thing it just. It's just awkward like people can see through it they're smarter than that. So as soon as you start posting things where people can clearly tell that you're lying like they know that you're not actually in a challenge. They're not actually you're not actually in a scavenger hunt you're not in some type of competition it immediately takes everything you say in the future and just puts a cloud over it like. Is this real is she actually doing that or is this just a sales pitch and it just completely diminishes trust so that's the first and most important thing is you're just destroying trust with the people, that are following you. And so then with that anyone who does fall for anybody who does actually comment on your post and it's like hey I have blond hair I meet your criteria I'm a nurse like. I'm part of your scavenger hunt and then you message them with a pitch for your product or telling them. Awesome I just need to have you buy this thing for fifty percent off and try it for a week and like blah blah blah or whatever it is or trying to get them to host a party. You have now shown that person that they should not comment on your posts unless they want a pitch message to them afterwards.
[7:06] And the result is that that person will never engage with your posts again in the future out of fear that you're going to pitch them. People don't want to be sold like we none of us want to be salesy what right that's like one of the biggest objections to joining a direct sales companies like I don't want to be sales and what is that person thinking of when they say they don't want to be salesy they're thinking of that cold awkward pitch. That gets sent after you tell someone I'm going to challenge comment on my post and then you message them asking them to buy from you, when they were like I just wanted to help a girl out like I'm not looking for a new cleanser I'm not looking for a new backpack like I wasn't. Looking for these things I just wanted to help you out. So once that person realizes oh my gosh if I hadn't commented on her post I wouldn't be in this tremendously awkward situation where she's trying to sell me something and I just wasn't like that's not what I wanted in the first place.
[8:02] They're going to make the decision in the future to not comment on your post and not engage with your posts out of fear that they're going to be put in that really uncomfortable position again.
[8:13] They're going to see your social media posts as a trap that they don't want to be caught in, so instead of posting these clickbait posts that just serve the sole purpose of getting someone to comment so that you can send them a message and Pitch them.
[8:31] Look for other ways to connect with your audience and I'll talk about some options at the end of this but that's the result of doing that is that you take a perfectly engaged follower the exact type of person that you're looking for and you turn them into an unengaged follower.
[8:48] And that by itself is not good but let's talk about the result of that the result of taking a perfectly engaged follower and turning them into someone who will never engage with you again. As a result of doing that you're going to constantly be on the hunt. For New Leads and new followers because you've burned Bridges with your current leads and followers. This means that you might always get some engagement when you post something like this. But that engagement is only going to come from people who haven't fallen into the Trap before. The people who have been there done that they know better and they're not going to engage with you. So your engagement overall plummets and you have to work twice as hard to get engagement and you constantly have to be searching for a new lead.
[9:41] So instead of being able to nurture the people that are right there in front of you the perfectly engaged people. That were excited to connect with you and comment on your post and do business with you instead of being able to actually connect with them you constantly have to find new people to connect with because the bridge has already been burned with the people that were standing there right in front of you instead of adding to your current pool of leads you're burning and churning and that is. Completely exhausting and it's totally unsustainable you will not be able to do that forever before you completely burn yourself out.
[10:22] So what do you do what do you do instead these posts are being passed down from quote-unquote generation to generation from applying to down line from upline to downline and, it's really hard to get out of that cycle when no one's coming up with new ideas so let's talk about that really quick.
[10:41] First and foremost I want you to recognize that social media is a long game. If you nurture the audience that you have in front of you instead of Burning Bridges.
[10:52] Pool of Leeds will grow instead of turning over right so you're adding to the people that you already have. Instead of taking the people you already have plucking one out and adding a new one in. When you turnover leads instead of adding leads, it means that you never actually grow you do the equivalent of Treading Water you constantly stay in the same place at first it might feel good because you are getting a new lead. But when you actually go and look you realize okay you started out with a hundred leads and now you still only have under the lead. Because for every one that you added you lost another one because that bridge was burned.
[11:39] So again we've got to recognize that social media is a long game we want your pool of leads to grow and said of turning over and so that means that you need to nurture the people you have in front of them instead of trying to bait them into making a purchase or booking a party or something like that, this means that even if someone isn't ready to buy or book a party or join your team or whatever it is. At least they're still in your space and they could eventually convert in the future or they could eventually refer somebody in the future but if you burn that bridge and they leave your space.
[12:23] That's done there's no more opportunity there aside from recognizing that social media is a long game and you have to nurture the people in front of you you've got to post consistently, and when you're posting consistently your priority needs to be creating a connection building a relationship so this means that when you're posting share stories be relatable be genuine avoid using these clickbait posts and comment bait posts that really just burn those bridges there quick fixes and they really just do more harm than good they might get you a fast quick result in the moment but like we talked about, instead of adding to your pool of leads you will be burning and churning and that leads to burnout at leads to exhaustion and It ultimately means that you're always going to be Treading Water instead of actually growing your business.
[13:23] So instead make sure that you're posting consistently and that when you're posting your goal is to be relatable to build relationships and you can do that by doing things like telling stories showing behind the scenes. Things like that that help people really get to know you as a person, and not just the product you're selling and so that they don't start to see your social media as a trap but rather. Place to be social and they can start to see you as somebody they actually want in their space and last but not least I want you to remember the people in front of you are exactly that, they're people they want to get to know you as a human not as a salesperson, so do what you can to connect with them on a deeper level in a more long-term way build the.
[14:15] The way that you would connect with a friend instead of using them for a conversion instead of looking at them with dollar signs in your eyes and saying. Is this person a booking could I potentially sell to them maybe they'll join my team. Look at them and say how can I really connect with this person how can I get to know them get to know how you can serve them how can you be of service, to the person in front of you instead of how can they be of service to you when you shift the way that you're thinking about the people in front of you and you start really seeing them as individuals and looking to build those strong, long-term connections and coming from a place of serving instead of a place of sales.
[15:01] Everything else is going to come naturally the booking, the purchases the joining your team that will come naturally when the right people are in front of you and those people feel comfortable with you and they feel good about actually being in your space but that's not going to happen when bridges are burned if they feel uncomfortable if they don't feel like they have a connection with you if they see you as someone who is sale see who's only out for the dollar they don't want to be that person themselves and they definitely don't want to engage with someone who's acting like that towards them so remember the people in front of you are people create lasting connections and everything else is going to come a lot more naturally.
[15:50] All right I hope that this was helpful for you I hope that this gave you some good Insight on why these posts are harmful to your engagement to your business, to the relationships that you're building to the leads that are in front of you and I hope this can Empower you to really take some steps to treat your social media differently too really use it as a strategic tool instead of looking for quick fixes and Band-Aids and I also hope that this makes you feel a little bit more confident taking what other people tell you to do with a grain of salt I know that this is a strategy that's passed down from person to person to person and you might even look at someone and say oh well they had 50 comments when they did this they had a hundred comments when they did this.
[16:39] The problem with that is that you don't know what's happening behind the scenes with them. If they had a hundred comments they've no burned Bridges with all 100 of those people well they're now out doing a hunt for a hundred New Leads so just keep in mind that when someone's pointing you in the direction of a new strategy take off the rose-colored glasses and just be a little bit skeptical like pick it apart a little bit make sure that it's really a strategy worth investing your time in that it's really going to give you long-term results because this is an example of a strategy that will absolutely not give you positive long-term results it will give you some really negative ones though and you don't want that if you're looking for an easy way to start connecting with your audience a more sustainable strategy that's going to help you grow your pool of leads instead of turning and burning your pool of lead.
