Too many have reached out to express their disappointment in the inaction of the leaders in the direct sales industry.
I share their disappointment. So many, in positions of influence, have stayed silent during this 7 days of #AmplifyMelanatedVoices.
- Promoting sales.
- Talking about their business goals.
- Going about their regular, daily lives as if black men and women weren’t being killed on the street without cause.
Too small a number posted a single black, silent square on Tuesday and then said nothing else.
And I get it.
It’s easy to feel like you’ve done your part when it isn’t happening to you. When the blood isn’t on your street so you can push it out of sight out of mind. But that doesn’t make the blood less real.
The perception is a lack of caring.
I won’t pretend that I can accurately know whether it stems from a place of ACTUALLY not caring or it stems from a place of ignorance. But my guess is that it is a combination of both… and that if that person is reading this message they are HIGHLY offended right now. And if that person is you, I hope that you will read on.
➡️ You are not being condemned. You are just being tapped on the shoulder to do more. ⬅️
Today I encourage you: reach out to your leaders.
Share the disappointment that you have shared with me.
You CAN make a difference and this is your chance to show that your feelings are more than just words. That they are actions.
Some may object.
And it’s not your job to argue them into submission.
But here are my thoughts on the objections I’ve heard so far:
🚫 But it’s year-end. If I mute my voice for 7 days, my business will suffer, I won’t hit my goal.
➡️ Frankly, people of color have been muted for YEARS. It’s time to put our egos aside and do the right thing even when it is inconvenient. Is your goal bigger than the life of a fellow person?
🚫 I don’t want to push an agenda. My social media is a neutral safe space.
➡️ There is no such thing as a neutral space that is also safe. Neutral means both the oppressor and the oppressed, the terrorist and the terrorized are welcome. As long as the bully is welcome, the bullied are not safe.
🚫 I don’t talk politics on social media.
➡️ This isn’t politics. It’s human rights. All humans deserve rights, and yet some have less than others. That’s not ok.
🚫 Everyone knows I’m not racist. I don’t have to shout it.
➡️ This isn’t about you. And while we all have work to do, I won’t even go there because: this 👏🏻 is 👏🏻 not 👏🏻 about 👏🏻 you 👏🏻 – this is about those in your presence. Those learning from every choice you make. Those who see your inaction and choose to also not act. Show others how to speak up. Show them that leadership is about more than hitting a sales goal…
It is NOT enough to be quietly not a racist behind closed doors. We must be vocally and publicly anti-racist.
Reach out to your leaders.Reach out and encourage them to step into the power that they hold and make a change.Make a difference.YOU can be the change they need. But you have to speak up.
