Is your new consultant packet killing your direct sales team?

I’ve got news for you… Your new consultant packet could totally be killing your team without you even realizing it. (Scary, right?!) But, there are changes you can make to your packet that can totally up-level everything.

1. Answer the Question: What is Most Important for My Team Member to Do First?

New consultant packets are most used, and most effective, in the first 30 days after someone joins your team. That’s when they are most excited to get things done – So, anything on that to-do list (because honestly, at their most simple that’s what a New Consultant Packet is) is what is your new consultant is most likely to actually accomplish. And she can tell when she is getting results vs. doing busywork. 

When you give you clear steps that directly impact her success you’re setting the stage for a relationship of trust – she will see you has a true leader AND accomplish more in her first 30 days.

2. Show Her That It is Simple and Easy to Be a Consultant on Your Team.

Your new team member does not understand her business yet the way you do.

So when you brain-dump every tracking sheet and to-do list item she MIGHT ever want it isn’t helpful… it’s overwhelming. She can’t yet see why they might be useful. Even if you say otherwise, she feels completely in over her head.

Show that being a consultant on your team is as simple as 1, 2, 3 by paring down your packet to only the most essential tasks. 3. Make Your Packet Easy on the Eyes. Yes I’m Serious.

There’s a big difference between cute and tacky, tasteful and overwhelming, dated and fresh. On which side of the line does your new consultant packet fall? Your new consultant packet needs to make her feel good when she looks at it. She should never be questioning her decision… but if the very first tool she’s given to kickstart her business looks like a DIY clip art project from 1998, you better believe she’s thinking to herself “is this for real?” Not only does a professionally branded new consultant packet make you look good, but it reassures your consultant that she didn’t just make a major mistake by joining your team.

4. Put Your Personality Into It.

You don’t need me to tell you that everyone and their mother is using some version of the same old packet that a Director shared at her training 10 years ago. Back when I used to design custom packets I saw it all the time – I could almost read my client’s minds before they spoke:

“My new consultant packet is most a mix of (not going to share her name!) from a training years ago.”

And oh, I could tell. From the 3D Microsoft publisher clip art to the corporate color scheme… it screamed her name from a mile away. And it wasn’t a good thing.

Personality, or personal branding, is the thing missing from most new consultant packets and it is truly a disservice to you as a professional.

Your consultant didn’t join your team for the products. She could’ve joined ANYONE’s team for the products. But she chose to join YOURS, so she should know who she is working with. Use a color scheme that shows your personality, choose fonts that send the message you want to send, include professional (or at least well lit, non blurry) photos of yourself. Include your own Unit Name in the packet.

Make your new consultant feel like she joined the team of a rockstar consultant or director who knows her stuff. A real live human that she is excited to connect with and get to know!
